Sally B’s: From Defeating Cancer to Becoming A Diamond in the Skincare Industry

In a virtual world, it is often heart-warming to visit people face to face. Last week, I took a trip to visit Sally B’s Skin Yummies. I had previously written about Sally B’s because I believe in the power of natural ingredients within skincare products. However, I had only experienced the products through ordering online; I had never visited the store, and this time I was so glad that I made the trip. The product line is fabulous, and I am actually in the process of converting my entire facial routine to Sally B’s. However, on my visit, I gained far more than a visit to her store; I gained an understanding of Sally and her products.

Sally B’s Story

Since visiting Sally, each time I think of her and the Sally B’s store, I think about diamonds. Yes, her store is beautiful, but my thoughts run a bit deeper. Diamonds form under immense pressure. They also form from a deep place, and their origins are not always optimal. Nevertheless, the results are beautifully shaped, rare crystals for all to admire.

I believe that this same process formed Sally B’s. On my visit, I asked Sally how she began her business. Her response touched me.

When Sally was in her late 30s, she developed bone cancer. Over the course of one year, Sally overcame and defeated cancer. However, in the process, she had lymph nodes removed. Lymph nodes are designed to remove toxins and clean the interstitial fluids within the body. In short, lymph nodes keep a person from sickness. Unfortunately, the lack of lymph nodes caused Sally to develop lymphedema. Lymphedema results in localized swelling and fluid retention due to removing the lymph nodes. It also leads to a high risk of infection.

For many years after Sally defeated cancer, she would get infections which sometimes led to hospital stays. She began researching products that contain toxins that enter your body through both the mouth and the skin and how they negatively impact your health. Sally started making her own skincare products that are free of hazardous chemicals.

Under chemists, Sally studied to fine-tune her education on beauty products. As a result, she has become a formulator. Beauty formulating is much more than mixing ingredients… temperatures, ratios, and so many other aspects are imperative when creating quality products.

Sally could have made her products for herself and continued with life. Instead, she chose to share the pure, non-toxic products with others. Sally experienced pressure and adversity as she defeated cancer, and as a result, a diamond was formed… and one to share with the world, Sally B’s Skin Yummies.

Sally’s Products

Having been an educator for almost two decades, I know the importance of teaching people. I appreciate Sally’s commitment to teaching others based on her experiences. I love Sally’s skincare products, and I have realized that due to her battles with cancer and lymphedema, she was supposed to make a successful line of pure and wholesome products. However, she chose to share her story, knowledge, and products with others in hopes that they will not have to experience what she did.  

Honest Products

It is essential to be knowledgeable about the quality of products, such as those that are non-greenwashed. I was not familiar with the term greenwashing. Sally explained that greenwashing is when a company makes claims about the safety or non-toxicity of a product but cannot substantiate it. With greenwashing, a product’s label doesn’t back up its organic, safety, or environmental advertisements.

Let me give you an example.

If a conditioner bottle states that the conditioner does not have Sodium Laurel Sulfate (a chemical that makes items suds up), that sounds great to unknowing customers. However, there was never a need for a conditioner to suds up and contain Sodium Laurel Sulfate. The brand tried to make its customers think that it was green, although this was a manipulated tactic hoping that customers would purchase their product.

Throughout researching the Sally B’s brand, I have realized that she is honest in her advertising. Sally will not sacrifice the truth to make a sale.

Quality Products

Sally B’s was one of the first skincare businesses in the world to gain the EWG seal of approval. EWG certification verifies that Sally does not use chemical agents in beauty products that affect users’ immune systems, toxicity levels, and/or cancer-causing potential. Sally B’s abides by European beauty industry standards, which are much more strict than those in the United States.

In my previous article, I mention many of Sally’s products. However, after my visit, I wanted to focus on a few products that are unique in nature.

I have a friend who, within the last year, has battled cancer. Sally’s story and mission hit home with me. I asked Sally about products for those fighting and recovering from cancer. Sally taught me about two particular products and their benefits.

Sally B created Herba-Pads as an alternative to deodorant or to use as a refresher during the day. My friend who battled breast cancer went for a while without the ability to use deodorant. Herba Pads give people the power to freshen up if needed. The pads are made from an organic blend of essential oils and herbs. While using Herba-Pads, you never have to worry about the toxicity of aluminum, parabens, glycols, or artificial fragrances.

I am a fan of the gentle Sally B’s Tamanu Luxury Facial Cleanser (Check it out on Amazon). I also mentioned the cleanser in my previous article, but I learned so much more regarding the cleanser when visiting Sally. The facial cleanser is fantastic for people of any age. The featured ingredient, Tamanu, is used by Polynesian women for skin and wound care. Tamanu oil is anti-inflammatory, and it is excellent for rosacea and acne.

As Lucy develops an interest in beauty products, I want her to learn that there are no alternatives to pure ingredients. With time and advancements in technology, society has gained so much information in the last decade. I do not want Lucy rubbing potentially cancer-causing chemicals into her skin to wear makeup. To my happiness, Sally’s has an entire line of makeup. Sally had great advice for dealing with younger skin. She taught me that, above anything, make sure that the ingredients are clean.
