7 Lessons That I Have Learned in a Year of Travel Blogging

In just over a year of travel blogging, I have learned some valuable lessons. Although you can never learn from someone else’s experience like you can from your own, the following are my most prized takeaways.
1. If you think you can write, think again….
I agonized over my first blog articles, and now looking back, my writing was a mess. It is very possible that in a year from today, I will think the same thing about my current blog posts. However, I am confident that I am a better writer than I used to be. Grammarly has been a significant contributor to my blogging. You will save yourself hundreds of hours by using this program. Also, the more you write and take heed of Grammarly’s corrections, the better writer you will be. With Grammarly, each article will be more improved than the one before! Oh, did I mention that it is my favorite graduation gift for high schoolers on their way to college!

2. Take breaks
I want to keep my travel blogging love burning so that I always produce quality articles. I just came off of a two-month article sabbatical. Why? Because I could. I wanted some time to reflect and to desire blogging the way that I did when I first began. My sabbatical worked, and it was great because I am refreshed and ready to go!
With taking breaks in mind, be selective on the trips that you write on. I blog on about 50% of the trips that we take. There have been many travels this year that I have not written on because I either wanted to preserve that time with my family or because I was tired and needed a break… and there is nothing wrong with that.

3. Have a plan for when your dreams do come true
I about choked under pressure when I got what I wanted… I would get a few restaurants or attractions sponsored in the towns that we visited until one day, I got everything that I had ever imagined. However, I realized that my dream came with work, tons of work. The pressure of writing quality and well-thought-out articles in a short amount of time got to me. I needed a plan for when I made it. Now, whether I get one attraction or restaurant comped or seven of them, I will organize, work smart, and have a timeline.

4. Pick the courses that you purchase wisely
I would not have survived without Pete and Heather’s blogging courses at It’s a Lovely Life (try out their free five-day course) and the Blog Millionaire Podcast…. I also would not have survived without Bluehost. However, this year I was burned too. I gave $1200 to a program that didn’t work out. Be careful and don’t pick classes based on what people “promise” you; choose those that are well established and proven.

5. Be patient on the money
Do I make money each month from blogging? Yes. Do I make enough money each month to cover my house payment? No. However, I am so much farther along compared to when I began blogging a year ago. I have learned that it takes 24 months to develop the blog and that patience really is a virtue. I figure that I am halfway there, and I am content with that!
6. Write with emotion
Don’t forget why you began blogging. We have two blogs. One is informational, and the other has more emotion, and we purposely distinguished them. To produce articles that I am passionate about, I choose to craft this blog with emotion.

7. Carp Diem- seize the day
Do you know that when I wrote this article, I was spraying on my make-up? Also, this article was originally written on sticky notes? Keep a notepad, sticky notes, or the notes section on your phone handy when you are not formally sitting at your desk. Be prepared when inspiration strikes!

Although my list is by no means comprehensive, what I learned is valuable to me and to how I blog. I hope that my words will lead you to success and inspiration. As always, please come and visit us at Loving Living Green and Campers and Campfires!

What great ideas!! I’m loving Pete & Heather’s course too and am learning so much. Might be a tad bit overwhelmed with setting up my blog at the moment but I’m sure it will all come together eventually. 😀 Thanks for sharing what’s helped you and your experience.
I promise, it gets better. Their course is the best out there! 😃
I just celebrated my blog’s one-year anniversary last month. Great tips! Especially love the one about planning when your dreams do come true.
Isn’t it amazing what we can learn in a year. Here’s to many more 🎊
