Vacationing with Three Oaks Farm in Beautiful Coastal Georgia

I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason. I don’t believe in flukes or mistakes. Events in life, whether great or small, are all part of a much higher plan.

On a recent trip to Jekyll Island, our family visited the wharf. I walked up to a ticket window, thinking it was for the dolphin tour (which was amazing, by the way). I was at the wrong window, but I began chatting with Whitney from Three Oaks Farm. Due to my mistake, our great vacation became one we will never forget!

Three Oaks Farm serves residents and visitors of the Georgia coast with activities such as beachside horseback riding, carriage rides through historic Jekyll Island, ghost tours, a petting zoo, a mobile petting zoo, summer camps, special event planning, photography, and so much more.

Jekyll Island is very laid back, and it is an excellent location to get away from the rat race of life. However, while on the island, Three Oaks Farm can provide a relaxing yet fun adventure for the entire family. We rode horses on the beach and took a carriage ride on the island. Our family had a fantastic experience!

We love that Jekyll Island is a year-round vacation destination. There is no offseason, and because of this, visitors and locals alike can enjoy all that Three Oaks Farm has to offer each time they visit coastal Georgia.

Take one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and pair it with a horseback ride? Yes! At sunset? Where do I sign up?

Three Oaks Farm, located at Clam Creek, offers trail rides for all ages on Jekyll Island. You can ride as a family, as a couple, or individually. Both public and private experiences are available. The farm has 53 horses, so there is plenty of riding availability for large groups.

When we arrived at Clam Creek, we watched a video on horseback riding safety. Jackson and Lucy were fitted with helmets, and the staff answered any questions we had.

I will admit, I was scared at first. I had not ridden a horse in 20 years, and I was not even sure that I remembered how. So when I got on Annie, who was specifically chosen for me, I was not really sure that I could go on an hour-long ride. However, Curtis and Jesse from Three Oaks were so kind and patient that within minutes, something I was so nervous about was not a problem anymore. The fear subsided, and my joy flourished as we began our ride to the beach.

Neither Jackson nor Lucy had ever ridden horses, and Sean and I were unsure how that would go. Nevertheless, the kids did far better than I did, and they had no issue the entire ride. Belle was chosen for Lucy, Booker was chosen for Jackson, and Sean got Pete.

Curtis helped us mount the horses. Three Oaks and Curtis’s expertise made the transition from apprehension to adventure very easy! Watch the ease in which Jackson was able to hop on Booker!

Jennifer, our trail guide, rode April. She said that children ride with their families all the time, and those as young as six can ride independently with great success.

Jennifer is classically trained and has so much experience with horses. You can tell that Jennifer and the horses have a great relationship. The horses respond to her so well. Jennifer is proud that she had the opportunity of growing up with an equestrian background, and it is her goal to share her knowledge and gift with others.

Our trip began by riding through the Maritime Forest, salt marsh, and Clam Creek.

We saw fiddler crabs and the most beautiful vegetation. Once we crossed the creek and entered the beach, it was the most serene of experiences.

While hearing, smelling, and feeling the ocean, we were escorted down Driftwood Beach by these magnificent animals.

While riding, Jennifer touched my heart as she told us of a recent story where a son brought his 92-year-old father horseback riding on Jekyll. The father had been an avid horseback rider, but the man had not ridden in years due to his age. However, the staff is so accommodating that they paired the father with the perfect horse, and he set off on his last horseback riding adventure. Jennifer said that as the father reached the beach, he wiped tears from his eyes as he savored the experience.

Many people have found riding horses on the beach to be therapeutic. Jennifer told us that the rides are soul-invigorating, and all four of us agreed. The trail rides on Jekyll Island provide people with opportunities for clarity and freedom.

Horseback rides are available throughout the day, including at sunset. Riding beachside will become a part of our experience when we vacation at Jekyll. We cannot wait to return!

Three Oaks Farm also offers horseback riding lessons for those wanting to take their experience to the next level.

Horse-Drawn Carriage Tours

We were also excited to take a horse-drawn carriage ride through Jekyll’s historic district.

In a recent article, I wrote of the millionaires who purchased Jekyll Island in 1886 (you can find the article below). The carriage ride provides a fully narrated tour that delves into the founders’ lives. The tour details the history of the homes of the rich and famous, those who controlled one-sixth of the world’s wealth at the turn of the twentieth century, and who made Jekyll their winter home.

Tours are available that include afternoon tea at the famous Jekyll Island Club. Spooky good times are available as Three Oaks Farm offers nighttime ghost tours. Our tour guide, Miriam, told us many fun facts, such as that the window on the front of the millionaire’s church chapel is a Tiffany!

Three Oaks Farm’s Mobile Events

Three Oaks Farm offers mobile events as well. Let the farm take care of your next birthday party or event with their mobile petting zoo and pony wheel. The pony wheel includes four to six ponies at a time. Sleigh and hay wagon rides are available in Brunswick, Sea Island, St. Simon’s Island, and Jekyll. Horse and pony rentals are also available.

Summer Camps at Three Oaks

Camps are available during the summer months and on school holiday breaks at Three Oaks Farm. Day camp and overnight options are available. Children can immerse themselves in the world of the animals at the petting zoo, attend horseback riding lessons, and venture out on field trips to Jekyll Island.

While experiencing all that Three Oaks has to offer, make sure that all of your memories are captured with their reasonably priced photography packages. For $30, we received 100 pictures of our horseback riding adventure. I did not have to worry about juggling my phone and a horse throughout the ride. Carriage ride photography is available as well.

  1. I love riding so this really caught my eye. It is great to see they take such care matching horses with riders. It is wonderful to read how much the kids enjoyed their first time riding. I will definitely check this out in my travels. A beautiful location as well.
