Family Fun in the Southeast: Old Mountain Outdoor Adventures

When I think of participating in outdoor adventure parks, I usually think of Sean and Jackson having a guy’s day or reflecting on how brave I was in my younger years. However, on a recent trip to Mississippi, my perception pleasantly changed. We visited Old Mountain Outdoor Adventures, and they offered activities for the entire family.
I was so impressed with the diligence taken in creating Outdoor Adventures that I found myself wanting to participate in all of the activities that Old Mountain had to offer. The adventure course was designed for families by a family.
Old Mountain Outdoor Adventures accommodates all ages, skillsets, and needs with their ziplining, spider, and kid’s courses. You no longer have to leave part of your family at home on these adventures because there is fun for everyone at Old Mountain.
Meet the Owners
Russell Durham has always loved adventure. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in his younger years, and Russell has always loved extreme sports, from repelling mountains to climbing them.
Russell was a CEO of a hospital. He had a passion for healthy family activities. In the age of technology, Russell has witnessed both youth and adults become less active over the years. In 2017, his passion for family health and togetherness led him and his wife, Candace, to make a drastic life decision. Russell left the corporate world, and as a result, Old Mountain Outdoor Adventures was born.
After researching aerial nets in Europe, Russell turned family land into an adventure park. He also decided to leave no trace as far as the forestry and environmental protection of the trees. Each tree has wooden blocks protecting it from the wires. The blocks can be pulled down today, and there will be no impact on the trees.
We had the opportunity to watch Russell interact with many visitors. It was clear that customer service is an essential part of Russell’s business model. Russell and his staff work hard to ensure that everyone leaves happy and enthused to return soon.
The Staff
The ten staff members are dedicated and determined that each person who visits Old Mountain will have a great experience. They helped me several times on our recent trip by lending me a hand and showing our family how to tackle certain obstacles. I love that the staff is strategically placed so that all participants feel safe and have someone close by if needed.
Courses and Activities
If you are thinking about visiting Old Mountain, you will realize that there are more than zip lines here. The park accommodates children and adults with a variety of activities.
One of the best aspects of the park is that they use the most modern harnessing and zip line technology, the continuous belay. With the continuous belay system, it is impossible for those participating in activities to detach from the zip line cable until they have completed the course and reached the ground safely. Learning how the belay system worked, I felt assured that my children were safe as they glided through the trees.
Kiddie Quest
Kiddie Quest is specifically designed for children 2-3 years old. The quest is a near-ground obstacle course with games and equipment to play on for hours.
Kids Quest
Ok, so I know it is for kids, but the next time I visit, I want to try the Kids Quest treetop trampoline. The trampoline has 1,500 square feet of net, and you can bounce among the treetops playing dodge ball or just having fun.
Kids Quest also includes two pole obstacle courses so that no one misses out on the experience.
Spider Quest
When researching Old Mountain, I was excited and relieved that they offered the Spider Quest activity. It has been many years since I ziplined, and I know that my nerves are not as good as they once were. I needed the Spider Quest to build my confidence before partaking in more challenging obstacles.
Spider Quest was fantastic. The course is harness-free because you have a 9,000 square foot net below you, ready to catch you if you fall. In addition, there are 15 treetop obstacles that you can choose at your own pace. The Spider Quest is only the second ariel net course of its kind in the United States.
Treetop Quest
Treetop Quest is excellent for families or groups of friends. You will encounter 36 zip lines and other treetop obstacles on the quest. Pick between three courses that vary with difficulty, or spend the day trying them all!
Level One
Level Two
TruBlue Zipline Course
The TruBlue course is one of the newest and most thrilling in the park. You will encounter seven zip lines, a standing zip trapeze, two bridges, and a Leap of Faith.
Treetop Adventure Package
The Treetop Adventure Package is the most popular among guests. The package gives you a taste of all that the park has to offer, including two hours of the Treetop Quest obstacles and zip lines, an hour of Spider Quest, and a go at the TruBlue Zip Line Course.
Treasure Quest
The Treasure Quest is genius, and I can only imagine how fun it would be to complete this activity while on a field trip or with a group. Quizzes throughout the park are customized to your organization, such as a particular curriculum with school children, Bible study quests, and employee training questions. If you answer the questions correctly, you will find a treasure at the end of your hunt. This activity can be self-guided or completed in groups. If you are interested, make sure to send your questions, and multiple choice answers a week before your visit.
Group Activities at Old Mountain
Old Mountain is a fantastic group participation attraction. Join them for birthdays parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties, showers, corporate training, team building, church groups, boy and girl scout troops, clubs, student field trips, college groups, and more! They can facilitate groups of 300 people. If your group is interested in visiting Old Mountain, call for specific group rates!
The Mountain
While at the park, definitely enjoy the mountain view of the city of Winona. The mountain is a picturesque location for engagements at sunset, family reunions, and other special occasions.
We had a fantastic experience visiting Old Mountain Outdoor Adventures, and we look forward to returning soon. It is an excellent opportunity for families to have fun amongst the trees.

My family has started getting into their adventures. However, there are some obstacles in these courses that I haven’t seen yet. We’ll have to come and check it out.
