This weekend, we went out of town to eat with some relatives close to the Alabama line. When leaving the restaurant, I looked at my phone and saw a notification from 17 minutes earlier that my car alarm had been triggered.

When we arrived at my car, no windows were broken, and nothing looked wrong to the naked eye in the dark of night. The vehicle has video cameras that record 24/7, so I could not wait to access the footage.

Although it seemed like the longest car ride, when we arrived home, we pulled the footage. The cameras showed that a young man thought it would be fun to damage my car. His friend drove up in his truck to block the view from anyone passing by, and the man got out of the truck and came over, and kicked my car with his boot as hard as he could. Although the kick was hard enough for the alarm to sound, little harm was caused.

Within an hour of sending the footage to the police, the young man and his friend (the driver of the truck) were identified. The local police were fantastic, and I hope the word gets to them that I appreciate their efforts very much.

Although everything worked out in the end, I was very bothered by the incident. I can’t shake the fact that someone would pick a car, my car, or anyone else’s, and do harm. I can only imagine that the friend who purposely blocked the incident with his automobile would have been fighting mad if someone had damaged his truck. However, since my car was not harmed, I instead chose to pray for the men and hope they make better choices than what we witnessed on the video footage Friday night.

Throughout this weekend, the incident resonated in my mind and ties very well into my newest article about Mount Airy, North Carolina, also known as Mayberry. We have visited Mount Airy four times since 2012. I suppose this is because the theme of the town, Mayberry, makes me yearn for a simpler time when kids were safe while playing outside, communities were not so divisive over politics or religion, and when meanness did not lead people to hurt others’ automobiles, homes, OR each other randomly. I miss Mayberry.

I realize that the notion of Mayberry is dead, at least around the region where I live, but I do hope it is alive and well somewhere in America. Kids deserve the chance to be kids. Good citizens deserve the opportunity to work hard for their possessions without others causing ill will to them or their belongings. People deserve the chance to live without fear.

I often see Facebook posts about when I was young, people were good… we drank out of water hoses, neighbors and strangers helped each other, and the world was good, etcetera. Of course, the truth is that the world had problems then too, but I believe that it was still far more ideal than the world that children are growing up in these days. I miss the world I grew up in. I miss that once people did not have to be concerned for their kids to walk safely next door. I miss that people could once hold their beliefs without criticism or labels. I miss Mayberry.

Next week, I will publish the Mount Airy, North Carolina, article because it is a great place to visit. I hope you have a chance to travel there sometime to get refreshed. It is definitely worth the trip!
