Happy Harvest Mix

Living in the south, all it takes are temperatures below 85 degrees and a month that ends in -ber for people to go crazy with everything autumn and pumpkins. Fall means the onset of college football season, leaves losing their chlorophyll, and the media craze full of pumpkin spice everything. There is nothing like wearing a giant sweatshirt and cuddling with a blanket and a large cup of coffee to become excited about the festive months ahead… even if you have to do it with the air conditioning blowing.

Since I was a kid, fall has been my favorite season. I love the warm feeling and happiness of the holidays, and my birthday falls within this time of year. Fall is also an inspirational time for crafting and baking. At my house, we love the smell of cinnamon or brown sugar permeating the air when we bake.

One recipe that I love to make during the season is Harvest Mix. The treat is excellent when heading to an event or party, at home, or in the car for a road trip. The mix can be placed in an elegant bowl and served formally, or it can be placed in cellophane and tied with a cute little bow.  I also love the fact that you can replace certain ingredients based on which holidays or seasons you are serving the mix. Today’s focus is on autumn. Feel free to change out any of the ingredients to make your perfect Harvest Mix.

Harvest Mix

Harvest Mix Ingredients

1 box of Rice Chex cereal (12 ounces)

1 bag of Bugles (7.5 ounces)

1 bag of pretzels (15 ounces)

1-1/4 cup of Mellowcreme Pumpkins (candy corn pumpkins)

1-1/4 cup of candy corn

12 ounces of Reese’s Pieces

Harvest Sauce Ingredients

1 cup of butter

3/4 cups of brown sugar

1-1/2 tablespoon of vanilla extract or paste.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Cover two large cookie sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.

Pour the box of rice cereal into a large mixing bowl.

Add the bag of Bugles.

Combine the bag of pretzels with the mix.

Mix well and set aside.

Melt a cup of butter on the stovetop (you can use the microwave as well). Melt the brown sugar with the butter. Add the vanilla and stir well.

Pour the butter over the cereal mixture and combine all of the ingredients. Place the mixture onto baking pans and bake for 30 minutes. While the mixture is baking, take in the delightful smell of heated brown sugar.

After removing the mixture from the oven, cool it well. After it is completely cooled, place the ingredients back into the large mixing bowl. Add the bag of candy corn, the bag of Mellowcreme Pumpkins, and 12 ounces of Reese’s Pieces. Mix all of the ingredients well.
