11 Apps That Will Change the Way You Travel

As technology has improved, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of mobile apps that make traveling easier while increasing the fun. Loving Living Green is highlighting 11 travel apps that we love and depend on each time we travel.

First, we are showcasing five apps that just make traveling more fun. These apps make it easier to find unique attractions and places to dine. The attractions and restaurants that these apps have helped us discover are some of our favorites, ensuring that each trip is an adventure.

Roadtripper – The Roadtripper app is a must have if you are traveling by motor vehicle, whether around the country or around your town. The app will help you find locations that you did not know existed. Search parameters include your current location, or you can search along a planned trip, making sure you do not miss anything along the way. There are both free and premium versions of Roadtripper. The free version will provide you with all the same locations as the premium version, however the premium version eliminates ads and lets you save more locations. The premium version is $29.99.

Roadside Attractions – This app is like Roadtripper, however there are even more offbeat locations in their database. When you first download the app, you can choose from one of seven regions of the United States that is included when you make the purchase. The app is $2.99, and you can add more regions for $1.99 each. However, you can gain access to all the regions of the United States for $5.99 total. Have you ever wondered where Benjamin Franklin flew that kite? If so, this is the app for you.

Diners and Drive-Ins TV Unofficial Guide – If you watch Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, this is your app. Although it is not affiliated with the show, the app makers have collected the various locations that Guy Fieri has visited throughout the years and placed them in their database. This app will help you find those unique dishes that you saw on TV and thought looked so good.  We have found restaurants we love, even around our own town, by using this app. Whether we were dining at the Colonnade in Georgia, the Rivershack Tavern in Louisiana, or the Eveready Diner in New York, this app has guided us to some good eating.

History Here – The History Here app is affiliated with the History Channel. History Here identifies locations near you that have historical significance. This app is free, and it is great to have on any road trip. The app developers have also created historical themes so you can create your own tours, such as Al Capone’s Chicago.

Passport: Your National Parks – One of our favorite things to do on any trip is to visit national parks. The National Park Service includes our national parks, monuments, battlefields, seashores, and other locations. The National Park Service has created a passport book. This book contains each of the National Park Service locations. When you visit a National Park, you can have your book stamped with a park cancellation stamp. The stamp shows the date and location of your visit. We have over 80 stamps in our book, and this app is its companion. It gives an overview of each National Park and lets you know where you can get your cancellation stamps. If you enjoy visiting the national parks, get the book and this app.

The next two apps will help you stay better organized when you travel. Rarely does our family forget an item, and it is because we use these apps. The apps help us to make sure that we have everything we need no matter what type of trip we are taking.

Packing Pro – Packing Pro is a great app to use when packing what you need without forgetting essential items. You can create customizable packing lists and templates for different trips. For example, we pack differently for cruising than we do for camping, but many of our base items are the same. You can use a base template and then differentiate the lists as you go depending on how and where you are traveling. The app syncs with other phones so everyone has access to the same packing list. Whenever you think of something that you want to add to a packing list,  just open the app and add it. As you prepare and pack for your trip,  check off items on the app so that you will never forget anything again.

Packpoint – This is a unique app in that it helps you create a packing list based on your destination. Enter your destination and the dates you are traveling. The app will ask you to input activities in which you plan to participate. Packpoint will generate a packing list for that specific destination based on numerous factors such as the weather and the types of activities you are traveling for.

Everyone wants to get a good deal when traveling. Many travel apps are designed to ensure that you get the best deal possible. These next three apps are our favorites when it comes to finding the best prices in town.

Hotel Tonight – This is the app is for finding last minute hotel deals. Often, hotels will offer discounted rates at the last minute because they have vacancies, and someone staying and paying at a discount is better than no one staying and paying at all. You can use the app to book hotels in advance, but Hotel Tonight specializes in finding those last-minute deals.

Cruise Deals – When you consider all that you get on a cruise, Loving Living Green believes that cruising is the most economical way to travel. Cruise prices include lodging, all-inclusive dining, and non-stop entertainment. Cruise Deals will help you find the best deal on a cruise by comparing the prices based on numerous cruise lines and ports. It is easy to set up parameters for your cruise such as choosing your port and destination. Since prices vary on cruises as the cruise lines try to occupy the ship, it is best to check back often to find the best deal.

Hopper – There are several apps that help you get the best prices on flights. However, Hopper is unique in that it looks at historical data to determine when the best prices will be available. When you are ready to purchase tickets, Hopper will suggest whether the cost of the tickets is the best price you will get or if that price is likely to rise or fall in the near future. The app is a good pre-planning tool when planning a trip in advance.

Our final app is about preserving memories. This is a great app to help make sure that every aspect of your trip is documented.

Travel Journal and Travel Log with photos – This app is a great way to document any trip. As the app name implies, it is an electronic travel journal where you can write the details of your trip, make recordings, and upload pictures. This is an awesome way to remember your travels  and keep all your memories in one location.

We hope that you find these apps to be as useful as we do. Organization and planning are key when traveling. And it is always great to find deals that make the mighty dollar stretch a little father.
